Dreaming of 160km/h: Korean Pitching Prospect Jang Hyun-seok Aims for Dodgers' Future with Crazy Strikeout Pace

Last year, Jang Hyun-seok (19, LA Dodgers) was the top amateur baseball prospect in Korea, sparking a scouting war. Now, halfway through his first year in the U.S., he shows promise despite some disappointing stats.

After signing with the Dodgers last year, Jang is playing for their rookie team this season. The minor league system consists of five levels: Rookie, Single-A, High Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. Jang aims to progress beyond the rookie level within a year. He has prepared thoroughly since last winter and is completing his schedule without major issues.

Adapting to American baseball, its system, culture, and language is crucial in his first year. His current performance offers positive aspects. As of July 3 (Korean time), Jang has pitched in nine rookie league games (six starts) with a 1-1 record and a 9.60 ERA. While this ERA is disappointing, major league scouts focus more on whether a player has the potential to succeed at higher levels.

Jang is healthy and his fastball velocity is consistent. Reports indicate he throws in the low to mid-90s (mph), with a peak velocity of 99 mph (159.3 km/h). He also has an effective curveball. In the rookie league, he has an impressive strikeout rate of 17.40 per nine innings, with 29 strikeouts in 15 innings, and a low opponent batting average of .186.

However, he struggles with control, issuing 6.6 walks per nine innings, and has allowed many home runs. This is a common issue for rookie-level power pitchers, especially in leagues where the dry climate leads to more home runs.

The Dodgers invested significantly in Jang, believing he can develop into a starting pitcher, which takes time. The key is to build a solid foundation and avoid injuries. Shim Jun-seok (Pittsburgh), who moved to the U.S. a year earlier, showed excellent stuff in the rookie league but has struggled with injuries. If Jang completes this season without injury, it will be a positive sign.먹튀검증
